Biliary remnant histology |
| Conclusive diagnosis of biliary atresia relies upon appropriate histological confirmation of the biliary remnant. This is facilitated by proper orientation of the specimen. The EFBAR steering group recommends the following techniques be adopted as standard practice. 1) Orientation of the biliary remnant by surgeon (at time of operation). The biliary remnant is pinned before fixation to maintain orientation. Picture 1
![]() An accompanying diagram is made by the surgeon indicating relevant anatomical parts of the specimen (particularly porta hepatis, gallbladder, common hepatic and common bile ducts). 2) Histology of the biliary remnant. Serial sections, at least one at each level, are made by the pathologist and will enable appropriate histological classification. Picture 2
